Fine Garden Maintenance & Ecological Care
Position Summary
The Fine Gardener is a skilled, hands-on gardener responsible for maintaining the health, beauty, and ecological integrity of JGDesign gardens throughout the growing season. This role focuses on detailed garden care, plant health, and consistent execution of JGD standards under the guidance of a Lead Gardener.
A particular interest or background in annual garden and container design is a plus, as JGDesign creates custom annual gardens for clients throughout the season.
The Fine Gardener works within established systems, learning how to care for gardens thoughtfully, efficiently, and ecologically—supporting long-term plant success.

Core Responsibilities
Garden Production & Maintenance
Maintain annual, perennial, vegetable, and mixed planting beds for assigned clients.
Perform and develop skilled horticultural tasks—including planting, weeding, deadheading, pruning, staking, soil care, cleanups, and mulch application—with training provided across all areas.
Ecological Gardening Approach
Through JGD's training program, Fine Gardeners develop ecological land care practices—including soil stewardship, mindful pruning, and supporting pollinator habitat—with a focus on long-term garden resilience over conventional aesthetics and approaches.
Required Skills & Experience
Minimum 1 year professional green industry experience
Foundational horticultural skills, including planting and garden maintenance
Familiarity with annual plant selection and garden design, container design using annuals, or a strong desire to learn JGD's process for creating custom annual gardens
Ability to learn plant identification relevant to JGD gardens
Strong attention to detail and pride in quality work
Ability to follow systems, standards, and safety procedures
Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions
Physically capable of lifting, bending, kneeling, and navigating uneven terrain
Tools, Technology & Learning
Willingness to learn company technology for time tracking and job documentation
Comfortable using basic mobile apps and digital tools for daily work
Open to training and ongoing skill development
Licensing & Requirements
Valid Massachusetts Driver's License
DOT certification required; (JGD will assist)
Background check required
First Aid / CPR required (training provided by JGD)
